Croquet Anyone?

I'm sure glad no one whacked any of my croquet balls into the lake!

I've loved this game since I was a kid reading my favorite childhood-era book, Alice In Wonderland. As in real life, humans and animals intermingle, but in a bizarre way. Like THIS world isn't bizarre enough!

The Cheshire Cat was the most logical creature in that crazy world. His conversation with Alice while he was in a tree is classic--go back and read it. As he disappeared, only his large smile was left. Great way to recall someone. I wonder if--when you thought of your old classmates while pondering the reunion--you remembered them almost always in "smiling mode." That's how I remembered my classmates when I was putting on our reunion. Either I am a Mary Poppins optimist or kids REALLY did mostly smile and have fun a lot back then, despite the crazy world of adults that tried to make kids NOT have fun with all the rules and regulations??!!!!!! I cringe when I hear an adult telling a smiling kid, "So what are YOU smiling about?" Hey, isn't a smiling child a thing of wonder to behold through the ages? Haven't we seen enough CRYING, starving, limbless, war-torn children?

Later the Cheshire Cat's head appeared above the croquet game, played by the Queen of Hearts ("off with his head!") and the King, who used flamingoes as their mallets and hedgehogs as balls.

The Cheshire Cat couldn't be be-headed, since only his head appeared! Clever fellow! Leave your body behind eventually but RETAIN YOUR HEAD!!! ("Everything's turning, turning around, see with your mind, leave your body behind." SUN IS STILL SHINING--the Moody Blues from the lp, TO OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN'S CHILDREN). By the way, THE MOODY BLUES ARE COMING TO THE CHICAGO AREA REAL SOON!

Jefferson Airplane had a huge 1960's hit with "White Rabbit," another character from the Alice books. He was always time-conscious (looking at his pocket watch) and in a hurry, fearing being late to whatever the Queen/King/System/The Man had dictated for him to do. Always fearful and scurrying about--sometimes I think as a teacher I have seen the elders too often put unharnessed, exuberant youth into this mould! Maybe wars and other crazy things would FINALLY stop if we just asked KIDS what to do! "Out of the mouths of babes." "And a little child shall lead them."

So who needs to be a pawn at this closing of the current Era, at the dawn of a New Era? Do the "kings and queens" really care about us front-liners/pawns taking all the hits?

"When men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go, and you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving slow, go ask Alice, I think she'll know, when logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead, and the White Knight's talking backwards (lying us into war after war?) and the Red Queen's "off with her head," remember what the Dormouse said, feed your head, feed your head!"

LEARN, LEARN, LEARN!!! Ignorance may be bliss, but it also chains you to what others would have you do and become, in their image. Be YOU!!!

After I became a student of planetary motion the game of croquet became even more fun. I always take the last ball once others choose theirs. Each ball is colored like a planet or the color associated with a zodiac sign. It is interesting to watch the red/Mars/Aries ball-toter playing with vigor, the yellow/Sun/Leo player being generous and dramatic, etc.

Thank you for the fun, everyone! On to the next match! I now have the croquet game in my van and I will meet any small group of you anywhere, anytime for fun is the sun--white rabbits or not!

I adopted Junie at 10 days old, a hapless orphan kitty. She is now 15 and looks like my Cheshire Cat.
