The Sister who named the black keys on the piano......something politically incorrect.....
Remember Sister Amard....remember her famous line when she was angry with us, which seemed like all the time? " I'd rather be teaching the "N*$%&# babies" in Gary than you!" And remember she got her wish...she went to teach at Bishop Noll...I also remember, that I believe it was Frank Kissel and or Keith Underwood who, when the nun's changed their habits, pointed out that Sister Amard had different color bangs periodically...she certainly didn't like that comment...and I think she turned a desk on one of the boys...she was one crazy nun...who by the way has passed away per Beth. God rest her racist soul....

That nun Sister Amard was MEAN!! I was so scared of her!! Did we have her in 3rd grade? I was wondering why she left. Deb, thanks for remembering her you have a great memory. How could anyone forget a nun like that?? I can see her yelling at us right now!! Man why were those nuns so mean to us?? They would never be able to teach in this day and age. I remember some of the boys taking erasers that were all chalked up and when she would walk by and move they would hit her butt and she would be walking around with chalk on her behind. We all thought that was so funny!! If she would ever found out we were DEAD!!! If I am not mistaken I think Sr. Amard was the nun that swung the counter brush at us calling us you donkeys!! I do remember her having a powerful swing we would dunk when that counter brush would come down over us. She did hit a couple of desks and they did turn over!! Man we were so abused!!!
Even though the nuns were tough they must have done something right.
We have many leaders in the class mates that I have talked to. They taught how to protect our selves from mean people. They taught us leader ship and respect.
But your right Rose, they were women and in some ways they put shame on the fact that women can be mean and I think they were top of the line.
As far as religion I think they have confused many but we are finding our way back.
Beth
I'd also like to take a count on how many are teachers and nurses from the 4 classes that are coming to the reunion.
So the nuns taught us a lot about care giving as well.
OOOHHH...The Dear Sr. Eymard! Politically Incorrect indeed! Wouldn't Johnny Cochran have a time with that comment! I was thinking we had her in the fourth grade. I remember one day for math we were to bring a protractor to class. Since I forgot mine she felt compelled to personally call my parents and tell them that I was a "revolutionary" because I forgot my protractor! Oh my..when I came home that day I got a true glimpse of Hell on Earth!! I was in such deep deep trouble...once again not seeing the light of day after hours for a month! There was no reasoning with my parents...she was the teacher and I was WRONG!!! Yikes... what a thing to remember!
I think her name was Sr.Eynard and I remember her banging that counter brush on Frank Kissel's desk and yelling at him and moving in closer and closer and him leaning further and further away until his desk flipped over. I can still see him sitting on the floor with his desk flipped over with his hands up to block the counter brush...I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight.
Chuckling...Jerry, did you say EyNARD!!! Beth and I are here laughing...what a funny story. She was a wild woman with that counter brush!
Didn't some of the guys take the brush and throw it in the woods next to the school?
I think you're right Debbie, someone did take the counter brush, but I don't think it was one of the boys. It was one of the girls. It was Anna Doyle !! YIKES !!!
Speaking of mean nuns.....Does anyone remember in 2nd grade with Sr Theodore we had a vocabulary book that she would call each of us up to her desk and she would go over our work. If it was sloppy or wrong she would hit us on the back? Remember that we had to have it all completed by a certain date and if it wasn't she was going to flunk us. I remember having an older cousin help me complete it. This was the only time I feared for my life in a catholic school!!! She also had a thing against us "left-handers", she said there was something wrong with us and at times she would call us to the black board and make us write right-handed. I am pretty sure the other lefties were Debbie Sarkey and Keith U.
Sister Eymard really knew how to make an entrance. Whether we were being naughty or as quiet as mice, her “Good Morning” greeting was always the same:
Boom! The classroom door would crash wildly open, and there SHE was, all of what seemed to be 8 feet of her! She clutched her massive counter brush and swung it madly over her head, bellowing at the top of her lungs, “CUT IT OUT!!!!!” Then she’d march over to a random, panic-stricken child and in a crazed frenzy she’d pound frantically on their tiny fiberglass desk with that brush.
I will never forget the morning that she was especially riled up and beat the top of somebody’s desk so forcibly that a HUGE chunk of it broke off and fell to the floor! There was a brief silence, no one dared look at anyone else for fear of laughing or perhaps crying, and then as if nothing at all had happened she turned, ambled to the front of the classroom and began reciting the morning prayers and the Pledge of Allegiance.
What a scarey nun!!! Peggy you decribed her perfectly. She was a very tall nun indeed. I do remember her always taking that counter brush and swinging it out of control. She would get so close to our litle faces I could smell her breath!! I think one time it was Frank Kissel's desk she hit and if Frank would not of ducked he would of been bruised for life. Yes, we were afraid to look at anyone fearing it might be our desks next!! I wonder why we never mentioned to our parents how abused we were. I think our parents would of been on the nun's side before sticking up for us!! That nun was out of control!!!
Debbie, I do remember in detail about Sr. Theodore!! It sure was not the best of memories!! Man, you would never want to look at her or even talk back to her. She was so vicious!! I never wanted to go to school in the 2nd grade because when she would call your name you better of known your homework and have it done!! If not there went her hand on her back and it was not pretty!! You were so humiliated in front of the entire class hoping it was over before it began. I studied my multiplication tables so hard cause I was not going to have her hit my back again. It really hurt when she slugged you. You wanted to cry but held back the tears cause you did not want your classmates to think you were a baby!! I could not wait to advance to the 3rd grade.
